Starting today reliance JIO has made all domestic calls to any network absolutely free. Reliance always knows how to make their happy on New year’s regime. You will be able to place calls from your Jio number to any domestic network across India free of cost. This move came just a day before the telecom regulator is set to abolish the interconnect user fee.
“Honouring its commitment to revert off-net domestic voice call charges to zero as soon as IUC (interconnect user charges) are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting Jan. 1, 2021,” the Mukesh Ambani-owned carrier said in a statement. “On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network.”
Due to a delay in the implementation of the Bill and Keep regime by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) in 2020, Jio says that it had no option but to charge the applicable IUC (interconnect usage charges) when you make calls to networks outside Jio. It led the company to ramp up the prices of its 4G LTE tariff plans in India back in 2019. It started charging 6 paise per minute (the IUC charge set by TRAI) for calls to Airtel, Idea, or BSNL numbers from Jio’s network.
While a free call would mean the limits on the minutes will go away, the prices will remain unchanged. This implies that the in-built IUC in the plan will get absorbed in the tariff.
According to reports, Reliance Jio is also set to relaunch its 5G feature JioPhone in the first quarter of 2021. Reliance has now reworked its component supplier base, and the new JioPhone is being made by contract manufacturer Flex. In October, a company official told PTI that Jio wants to bring a device for less than Rs 5,000.
