WhatsApp Channels are now available in India

Meta owned WhatsApp, a messaging service has launched the support for channels in India also, similar to Telegram. Recently Meta also launched the similar service on Instagram i.e. broadcast. Now this is a boon for creators who wanted to use this channel feature and was only restricted to Telegram. No doubt Telegram has well managed channel feature but WhatsApp cater to 1B+ active audience.

WhatsApp has highlighted that Channels operate independently from the regular chats, ensuring that the identities of those who choose to follow remain confidential to other followers. Using channels, administrators can broadcast in a single direction while maintaining the anonymity of both themselves and their followers. This includes sharing text, pictures, videos, stickers, and polls.

WhatsApp Channels

“Excited to introduce you all to WhatsApp Channels, a new private way for you to get updates from people and organizations you follow. I’m starting this channel to share Meta news and updates. Looking forward to connecting with you all around the world,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. Channels can be found in the new ‘Updates’ tab, he added.

The company adds that in addition to expanding the service globally, it is also updating Channels in order to improve their use and user interface.

The platform will roll out an improved directory where users can locate channels to follow that are automatically filtered based on their country as channels expand internationally. Additionally, based on the amount of followers, they can view the newest, most active, and most well-liked channels. Users will be able to respond with emojis to express their opinions and view a total number of responses. Reactions won’t be visible to followers.

Improved Directory: Users can now find channels by searching the automatically filtered directory by country. Users can also explore channels based on their popularity, newness, or amount of activity.

Emoji can be used by users to communicate their reactions to updates in WhatsApp Channels, just like they can on Instagram broadcast channels. The total number of reactions will be shown, but followers won’t be able to see the admin’s individual reactions.

Editing: Before they are immediately erased from WhatsApp’s servers, admins will soon be able to amend their updates for up to 30 days.

Forwarding: When an administrator sends an update to a group or chat, they must include a link back to the channel so that users may access it.
